POSITION: Maize Quantitative Geneticist, a 12-month, tenure-leading
position at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank, with a 80% research 20%
teaching appointment in the Department of Agronomy. The position is
administered by the Head of the Department of Agronomy. Available May 1,
1998.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Research emphasis will be in the area of quantitative,
population, or biometrical genetics with emphasis on theory and application
to maize genetics, breeding, and statistical genomics. Yield improvement,
yield protection, resource-use efficiency, and enhancing end-use quality
via genetic improvement are the research objectives. Collaborative
research with other breeders and geneticists, molecular biologists,
entomologists, pathologists, physiologists, and agronomists will be
necessary to achieve research goals. Good working relationships and
cooperative research partnerships with corn breeders and geneticists in the
private sector are also crucial to this position. Publication in refereed
journals, presentation of results at regional, national and international
meetings, and preparation of research reports and grant proposals are
required. Acquisition of extramural support for this research is expected.
Teaching responsibilities will consist of graduate level courses in
population and quantitative genetics with emphasis on application to plant
and animal genetics and breeding. Teaching responsibilities may also
include contributions to development and teaching of distance education
courses on the application of population and quantitative genetics to
professional plant breeders in the commercial seed industry. Advising
graduate students and service as major advisor for graduate student
research is expected. Additional responsibilities include service on
departmental and other university committees as appropriate, and adherence
to safety guidelines and policies in the workplace.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a Ph.D. in plant genetics, crop science, or
related field, an ability to publish original research in scientific
journals, excellent oral communication skills, strong computer skills and
biometrical training. Experience in maize genetics and/or hybrid crop
improvement research and knowledge of molecular approaches to facilitate
conventional breeding efforts are desired.
SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. UNL
