Dear Land Grant Colleagues:

An issue of active debate at some Land Grant Institutions concerns the
relationships among conventional plant breeding programs, gene patenting
and commerce. I would be quite pleased if you would respond with policies
that your institution has adopted to address these issues. If you are not
familiar with the policies of your university, I ask that you forward this
message to the appropriate person. I thank you.

In particular, we are interested in determining whether you and your
institution can enter into an exclusive licensing arrangement with a
private company or whether you must make patented genes available to plant
breeders within your college for breeding/commercial purposes.

I very much thank you for your efforts. Since this is a very important
issue, I plan to prepare a summary of your responses, with your approval,
and furnish it to those who respond.

Curt Hannah
