GEORGE SPRAGUE

The funeral will be held Dec. 1 for George F. Sprague of Eugene, who died
Nov. 24 of age-related causes. He was 96.

Sprague was born Sept. 3, 1902, in Crete, Neb., to Elmer and Lucy Sprague. He
married Amy Millang in Ames, Iowa, in 1945. She died in 1993.

A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Sprague went on to earn a
doctorate at
Cornell University as a student with Dr. R.A. Emerson.

He worked as maize geneticist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the
University of Illinois and Iowa State University.

He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and was a recipient of
the Wolf Foundation Award from Israel.

Before moving to Eugene five years ago, Sprague lived in Urbana, Ill. He
was an Army veteran and his interests included gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Lance of Iowa City, Iowa, and Judy
Sprague of Eugene; two sons, Don of Ames and George of Eugene; a sister,
Ruth Sprague of Florida; and two grandchildren.

Tuesday's service will be at 10 a.m. at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene.
Burial will be at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.
