POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Assistant Professor
PLANT DEVELOPMENT
This tenure-track position is available at the Assistant Professor level
in the department of Botany. We are seeking a scientist with an
innovative research program addressing fundamental problems in the
developmental biology of plants. Candidates must have a Ph.D., a minimum
of two years of postdoctoral experience, record of published research, and
will be expected to develop a rigorous, externally funded research
program. Preference will be given to candidates who study a developmental
trait at the molecular level using a genetic approach. The successful
candidate will complement faculty in one or more existing areas of
strength in the department, including molecular biology, genetics,
physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology. Examples of attractive
fundamental problems include, but are not limited to, the study of
developmental traits with adaptive significance, the application of
genomic information to the understanding of developmental pathways, and
the genetic analysis of homologous structures in an evolutionary sequence.
The ideal candidate will have a strong research record with clear evidence
of originality and scientific leadership, and is expected to be an
effective communicator and inspired teacher. Teaching will include an
undergraduate, upper division course in developmental biology, and
participation in one of the following areas: general biology, molecular
and cellular biology, morphology and anatomy in addition to graduate
seminars and training.

The Department of Botany has thirteen tenured faculty members and two
research faculty members spanning genetic, molecular, cellular,
physiological, developmental, ecological and evolutionary plant biology,
and encompassing diverse model organisms. The department has expansive
research facilities including a recently renovated greenhouse and new
growth chambers. Botany maintains strong connections to sister
departments, including Genetics, Zoology, Biochemistry, Molecular
Biotechnology, and Forestry, and is located at the core of UW Life
Sciences. The department emphasizes a balance between teaching and
research, delivering an integrated program in botany to a large
undergraduate enrollment and to a selected group of graduate students.
