Postdoctoral Position in the Genomics of Maize Hemicellulose Biosynthesis
A postdoctoral position is available to work with a group of scientists at
Michigan State University on an NSF-funded project on the functional
genomics of hemicellulose biosynthesis. The group includes Natasha Raikhel,
Jonathan Walton, Kenneth Keegstra, and Curtis Wilkerson (bioinformatics),
all of whom are in the Department of Energy-Plant Research Lab. The main
responsibility of the position is to propagate and analyze mutants of maize
that have been transposon-tagged in putative hemicellulose-biosynthetic
genes. Other compoments include computer-aided analysis of putative
hemicellulose biosynthetic genes, collaboration on related genetic analyses
of genes in Arabidopsis, and microarrays using a machine available in the
department. This is a unique opportunity to do pioneering work in the
fundamental but poorly understood process of cell wall biosynthesis. The
work requires knowledge of standard methods of maize genetics, including
molecular techniques, and an interest in a genomics approach to
biosynthetic processes. The position is available after December 1, 1999
and is initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to
