Dear Colleague:
We are searching for an individual to join the interdisciplinary starch
structure team at Penn State. This position is available now and we would
like to fill it as soon as possible. I am sending this announcement to
individuals who attended the recent "Genetic Tailoring of Novel Starch
Polymers" meeting and would appreciate it if you would pass this to anyone
who may be interested in this position.
Thank you,
Jack C. Shannon
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE
COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
Position Description
Post-doctoral position available as part of an interdisciplinary
team studying the contribution of maize starch branching enzymes to the
structure of starch. The team consists of Dr. Donald Thompson, Dept. of
Food Science, Dr. Jack Shannon, Dept. of Horticulture and Dr. Mark
Guiltinan, Dept of Horticulture, Biotechnology Institute. The individual
would be primarily responsible for determining the fine structure of
branched starch molecules produced by disruption of the normal complement
of branching enzyme activity in maize. Experience in preparation of starch
and starch fractions, and related chromatography is essential. Experience
with starch fine structure analyses, including use of beta-amylase and
debranching enzymes, is also essential, along with the ability to interpret
the data obtained according to the most current structural models.
Experience in the use of gel electrophoresis for separation of constituent
chains would be useful but not required.
Experience in selected molecular genetic techniques would be a
plus, but interest in learning and applying these techniques is essential.
The individual will perform PCR analyses to confirm genetic composition and
perform antibody blotting to determine the presence of specific branching
enzymes. Experience in maize growing and breeding would be a plus. The
project is funded by a grant from the Department of Energy.
APPLICATION: Applicants should submit a letter of application, resume,
