The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is one of 16
international agricultural research centres of the Consultative Group on
International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).  IPGRI's mission is to
encourage, support and engage in activities to strengthen the conservation
and use of plant genetic resources worldwide, with special emphasis on the
needs of developing countries. IPGRI's headquarters is in Rome, Italy and
the Institute has a total staff of more than 180, located in 19 countries.
IPGRI is seeking a well-qualified candidate, to be located in its
headquarters in Rome, for the position of:

Scientist, Genetic Resources Information Systems Management

Under the supervision of the Director, Documentation, Information and
Training Group, and in close collaboration with other IPGRI Programmes, the
incumbent will lead IPGRI's  activities in genetic resources information
systems management.  Specifically, the incumbent will:

*	Manage a global project on genetic resources documentation and
information management systems;
*	Assess strategic information needs and design and develop knowledge
databases and applications for conservation and use of genetics resources;
*	Maintain IPGRI's institutional databases on genetic resources,
including the directory of genetic resources collections;
*	Develop linkages between IPGRI's genetic resources databases and
global biodiversity information systems, for example, the Clearinghouse
Mechanism for the Convention on Biodiversity, in particular via the
*	Lead the development, dissemination and promotion of  standards,
tools, technical guidelines, and other resource material for documenting,
analyzing and facilitating the exchange of genetic resources, working with
IPGRI regional offices, and in close collaboration with national partner
institutes and international programmes;
*	Identify opportunities for collaborative work and liaise with
technical experts in national and international institutions, including
other CGIAR Centres, on global information management  issues relevant to
the conservation and use of plant genetic resources;
*	Participate in the development of training materials and training
events in the genetic resource information management and bioinformatics
*	Formulate funding proposals to donors to mobilize resources for
strengthening national programme scientific information management and
bioinformatics capacity;
*	Represent IPGRI in relevant meetings and international fora;

Qualifications and experience
The Genetic Resources Information Systems  Management Scientist requires:
*	Advanced university degrees in genetics, plant breeding or other
biological sciences or information systems, computer science or equivalent;
*	Minimum of 3 years of experience in information management systems
in the biological or agricultural sciences, preferably in a scientific or
research environment
*	Excellent knowledge of and hands-on experience with scientific
database management systems and the development of Internet-based
applications, interfaces and information systems
*	Excellent communication skills with fluency in English; knowledge of
French, Spanish, Arabic or other major international language is desirable
*	Ability to work in a multicultural environment
*	Demonstrated ability in project development and management
*	Understanding of international issues concerning genetic resources
