I have seen this to a limited extent. Actually, I have seen it in
others nurseries more than my own. I wonder if it is due to the
extreme heat and humidity that was in the corn belt just as grain
fill was happening. I got hot and humid and stayed hot and humid. I
made sure that we got 1 inch of moisture per week on our nursery all
through pollinations and up to 2 weeks following anthesis. We have
terrific grain fill.
I was able to fit all of your India, Egypt, and Brazil lines into the
Sept. '99 nursery for F1 make-up with ZMA101. We could then make the
BC1 in the Jan'00 nursery if you like and we have room.

An interesting phenomenon has been reported throughout the eastern Corn Belt
of the U.S. in recent weeks that has no obvious diagnosis. I would like to
hear ideas from the Maize news group about possible causes for what I am
calling, for lack of better descriptions, the Translucent Kernel Syndrome.

Two possibilities have been raised as to causes: 1) parthenocarpy and 2) a
defective kernel mutant.
I am also interested in whether others have seen or are seeing this symptom.
