Position Title: Geneticist (Plants)
Series/Grade: GS-440-09

Salary: $34,575 - $44,945

Type of Appointment: Temporary Not-To-Exceed one year (Appointment 
may be extended up to one additional year without further 
competition).

Location of Position: Woodward, Oklahoma Rangeland and Pasture 
Research Laboratory

DUTIES: Incumbent serves as a support scientist providing 
professional support to a plant germplasm research program concerned 
with developing improved forage cultivars. Incumbent works in both 
laboratory and field environments.  Performs experiments designed to 
provide answers to research problems in the areas of molecular 
genetics, cytology, botany, and plant breeding. Plans and carries out 
individual experiments. Devises and recommends alternative methods of 
analysis. Performs tests and analyses by applying established methods 
and procedures. Incumbent=B9s duties may include manipulation of 
chromosomes in polyploid species, chromosome counts, and preparation 
of plant cell samples.  Reviews pertinent literature and selects or 
modifies methods and procedures most appropriate for the research 
goals. Maintains cytogenetic, molecular genetic, and additional 
related equipment and instrumentation in working condition, 
performing preventative maintenance and repairs. Maintains laboratory 
notebooks and records the methods, procedures, and results. Prepares 
results of findings from experiments for inclusion in manuscripts, 
technical reports, oral presentations, and progress reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Bachelor=B9s degree in genetics; or one of the basic 
biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in 
genetics.

In addition to the Basic Requirement, applicants must have directly 
related education or specialized experience as outlined below:

GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a 
Master=B9s degree or completion of a Master=B9s or equivalent degree; OR 
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade 
level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience which has provided the applicant with:

1. Knowledge of the principles and theories of cytogenetics as 
related to botany and/or plant breeding.

2. Skill in operating and maintaining cytogenetic laboratory 
equipment used for DNA analysis.

3. Ability to collect, analyze, and summarize data.
