Position Summary:
This position will be responsible for conducting research on the
USDA/NSF/DOE-funded RICE GENOME PROJECT. This project is focused on
sequencing and annotating rice genomic DNA as part of the International Rice
Genome Sequencing Project. The successful candidate will participate in the
sequencing and annotating BACs from Oryza sativa as part of a
multi-disciplined team within the Eukaryotic Genomics department. The
candidate will be responsible for data analysis and leadership of other team
members.
Position Responsibilities:
* Involvement in all aspects of the BAC sequencing and annotation.
* Work closely with other rice team members.
* Utilizing state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools for data analysis.
* Keeps current with relevant scientific disciplines through continued
reading of the literature.
* Participates in TIGR laboratory meetings and scientific workgroups.
* Interacts with faculty members on matters of mutual scientific
interests.
* Works cooperatively with other staff when necessary to achieve TIGR
research goals.
Education/Experience Required:
This position requires a Ph.D. in plant science (genetics, physiology,
pathology), cell biology, or molecular biology and extensive knowledge of
molecular biology techniques or related field. Experience with high
throughput sequencing, annotation and knowledge of relational database
systems, SQL, and PERL is highly desirable. An aptitude for computer-based
analysis, familiarity with using public databases such as GenBank and a
willingness to learn such programs are essential.

interpret scientific data.
* Ability to conduct investigations in relevant scientific areas.
* Excellent organization and time management skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills; ability to effectively interact with
all levels of staff; ability to work as an effective team member.
* Ability to use sound judgement to effectively solve problems within
the scope of the position.
* High level of initiative and ability to work with minimum
supervision.
* Superior verbal and written communications skills.
