The new Plant Genomics Internships at University of Missouri-Columbia
(PGI @ MU) program is funded by the National Science Foundation. The
purpose of the program is to provide undergraduate students with the
opportunity to carry out cutting-edge research in plant genomics and
to attract talented students to careers in the plant sciences.
Plant Genomics at Missouri
The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) is a nationally recognized
center for plant genetics research and has recently been awarded ten
grants from the National Science Foundation to fund research in plant
structural and functional genomics. Faculty in biological sciences,
biochemistry, plant sciences/agronomy, and the USDA/ARS are eager to
provide training opportunities for undergraduates who wish to
participate in collaborative research. Research problems include:
genome organization, gene expression, signal transduction, hormone
action, organelle biochemistry, disease resistance, and crop plant
productivity. Genomics approaches to understanding these problems
include: genetic and physical mapping, multiple methods for
functional analysis, and bioinformatics.
Programming: PGI @ MU interns will participate in the same
orientation workshops, social event, weekly brown bag lunches and
evening seminars as over 60 other summer interns. Lunches, seminars
and workshops are designed to provide students with information about
research, career options, and scientific ethics. PGI @ MU interns
will participate in additional activities focused on plant genomics,
including a bi-weekly journal club to discuss new research
developments and technology and a one-day trip to a genomics center
in St. Louis. Students will present their research at the
Undergraduate Symposium on August 2. Travel expenses will be provided
for students who wish to present their work at the Maize Genetics
Conference in Orlando, Florida in March, 2002 or the Annual
Arabidopsis Meeting to be held in Madison, Wisconsin in June, 2002.
Internships will involve full-time research for a period of eight
weeks (June 10 - August 4, 2001). Summer interns will receive a
stipend, paid in monthly installments, to cover the following costs:
on-campus housing in double rooms of an air-conditioned summer
residence hall, a full meal plan, one hour of research credit,
educational fees and a student health fee. After these expenses are
covered, the amount of the stipend (before taxes) will be $2400.
Reasonable travel expenses between the student's home and Columbia
will be provided. Funding is available for ten interns.
