Postdoctoral Position: Mechanisms of Iron Acquisition in Grasses. E.
L. Walker Lab, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A postdoctoral
position is available for up to three years starting June, 2005. Our
main interest is in the mechanisms that higher plants use to acquire
iron from the soil and then allocate it correctly into cells and
tissues. We began this work with cloning and characterization of
maize YS1, which is responsible for primary iron uptake by the
world's major grain crops (rice, wheat, corn). These species use a
mechanism of iron acquisition that is fundamentally different from
that of most other plants. In this project, we will examine both the
extrusion of phytosiderophores-the strong iron chelators produced
only by grasses-and their re-uptake into cells, using genetic and
molecular genetic techniques in maize and rice. For additional
details, and to discuss the application process, please contact
Elsbeth Walker (ewalker at bio.umass.edu).
