Call for suggestions for generation of fluorescent protein tagged
maize marker lines.

Through an NSF funded Plant Genome Award, we are making fluorescent
protein tagged marker lines for cell, developmental and physiological
studies in maize. Our goal in this project is to make fluorescent
protein reporters for every known sub-cellular compartment in the
plant. If you would like to suggest a gene for tagging please visit:

http://maize.tigr.org/tigr-scripts/maize/cellgenomics/gene_sub.pl

Please note that we are making fusions to genes controlled by their
native regulatory sequences to avoid artifactual localization due to
mis-expression. Other criteria that guide our selection of genes for
tagging can be found on the website. In particular, details of how to
check if your gene includes sufficient genomic sequence are available
at the above site in the "FAQ" page. We will make decisions on
currently tagged lines; we are especially interested in genes whose
products are predicted to be in compartments not yet tagged (eg
plasmodesmata, mitochondria, etc). Please check the website for the
status of tagged genes already in the pipeline. Once you submit your
gene sequence, we will first evaluate the gene based on the selection
criteria on the website. We will notify you if and when your gene
enters the tagging queue. We will then make the fluorescent protein
tagged construct, transform it into maize and characterize the basic
expression pattern. All tagged lines will be carried to the T2
generation and seeds will be available to all members of the
community through the Maize Genetics Stock Center.
