Graduate research assistantship in maize molecular genetics and genomics
A graduate research assistantship for Ph.D. program is available to work on
maize molecular genetics and genomics in the Department of Genetics and
Biochemistry at Clemson University, South Carolina, USA. The assistantship
will provide medical insurance, tuition waiver, and a competitive annual
stipend. The student will work on a multidisciplinary team involving
geneticists, statisticians, and structural engineers to dissect the genetic
architecture of lodging resistance in maize and sorghum in Sekhon
laboratory through an NSF-funded project (

goal of Sekhon laboratory is to use systems genetics to understand the
genetic, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms underlying key agronomic
traits. The student will be trained in the traditional field- and lab-based
molecular genetics and statistical genomics. The student will be expected
to conduct high-quality research, present their research to a broader
scientific community, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Expected start date is Spring 2019.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a Bachelor’s degree
with a strong educational background in plant genetics and statistics
demonstrated by academic transcript. Candidates with a Master’s degree in
plant genetics/genomics/biology and a demonstrated publication record will
be preferred. Candidate should be a quick learner, prepared to work in a
multidisciplinary team, and enthusiastic to work outdoors in field plots
besides lab and computation work. Excellent interpersonal and
verbal/written communication skills are a must.
