I am sorry, but I come to this thread late, and have lost the address of
Paul Yadlowsky who posed the original question. I have a partial answer
from the Iditis relational database of protein structure that I wrote whilst
working in Prof. Janet Thornton's lab. This is now commercialised by Oxford
Molecular, and I do work for them, so I beg forgiveness for posting this to
the main newsgroup rather than Paul direct.
I used a list of 99 non-homologous proteins containing 167 protein chains
(this being the list that I had available), and constructed a query to
return the number of chains with a given minimum number of residues. The results are
as follows:
