Two suggestions:

1) Aluminum pieces. 1mm thick, 5mm wide, length 20..50 cm.
2) The cobalt-alloy wire orthopaedic surgeons use for
   fixing bones together (no kidding!), may be available
   from specialist shops or ask around the University Medical School.
   Very strong but ductile material.
