I recommend the following biographies - all about tropical medicine
types:
M.D. One Doctor's Adventures Among the Famous and Infamous from the
Jungles of Panama to a Park Avenue Practice - B.H. Kean
A Soldier in Science - Bailey Ashford
Ambassadors in White - Charles Morrow Wilson
An American Doctor's Odyssey - Victor Heiser
( Only the Kean book is in print - it's a paperback. You can often find
the others in used book stores).

The only other good books I know of that are still in print are
Berton Roueche's "Medical Detectives" series that are also in paperback
(which have essays about parasitic diseases.

     I also recommend:
Man Against Tseste (McElvey)
Mosquitoes, Malaria and Man (Harrison)
but they are definitely out of print
