african waterborne parasites

Help!
There's a long standing argument in sci.anthro.paleo about the
"Aquatic Ape Theory". One of the protagonists suggests that early
hominids would have spent a lot of time in the water in order to escape
terrestrial predators. Aside from the obvious fact that such a creature
would then be exposed to aquatic predators, it seems to me like a primate
who spend a lot of time in African waters would probably fall victim to
gobs of water-borne parasites. Any comments?
