Crypto in dogs and cats

I have read about your (U.T. and Auburn) low rate of recovery of crypto
from pound animals, but I also listened to the lecturer at NAVC discuss
finding a significant percentage of dogs infected. (Forgive me for not
having the name of the lecturer, I am still looking for my notes.) His
break-through in finding crypto was in using a rectal swab and staining it
with an acid-fast stain. The lecturer was using an ear-currette to get the
rectal material; he then used that to make the smear.

Realizing things are not always what they seem, have you heard of this
technique? If so, what do you think of it - it sounds like a simple test
for a clinical practice to perform on pets with an inflammatory diarrhea.
