FIRST SYMPOSIUM ON NEW WORLD TRYPANOSOMES
(Trypanosoma vivax, T. evansi, T. cruzi and T. equiperdum)

DAY 1: EPIDEMIOLOGY
National Epidemiological data to be presented by participants. Emphasis on
seasonal trends, vector transmission and economical impact is expected. This
session will conclude with a synthesis on the epidemiological situations of
animal trypanosomiasis in the New World.
DAY 2: DIAGNOSIS
1) Parasitological diagnostic techniques
2) Antigen detection tests
3) Antibody detection tests
4) DNA detection tests
Papers should briefly present the techniques, with emphasis on:
- technical interest ans limits
- cost
- sensitivity and specificity (genus and species specificity must be clearly
differentiated)
- parasite species and host species for which they are adapted
DAY 3: CONTROL AND ROUND TABLE
1) Parasite control
Problems with resistance, techniques of investigation in vitro/in vivo
Problems of multiple species treatments (T. vivax and T. evansi)
2) Vector Control
Chemical treatments
Livestock management strategies
3) Host parameters
Immune status of the hosts
Distinction between highly enzootic and non enzootic areas
4) The question of eradication
5) Round table and general conclusions at the end of day 3
