A new videotape details parelaphostrongylosis, the debilitating
neurologic disease of domestic and wild ungulates. This disease is
caused by the migration of Parelaphostrongylus tenuis in unusual
hosts. Dramatic videotape is presented of moose, goats, and llamas
with naturally occurring neurologic disease caused by P. tenuis. The
life cycle is detailed in white-tailed deer and in unusual hosts
using animation to reveal the involvement of the parasite in the
pathogenesis of "moose sickness." Living first stage larvae,
molluscan intermediate hosts and distributions maps illustrate the
epidemiology of the parasite. Diagnostic procedures and control of
the helminth also are emphasized. It is a 20 minute production by
M.W. Lankester and A.K. Prestwood.
