FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
&
CALL FOR PAPERS
FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BIOTHERAPY
Dear Colleague:
On behalf of the International Biotherapy Society (IBS) and the Organizing Committee I cordially invite you to attend the Fifth International Conference on Biotherapy. The Conference will be held in Wurzburg, Germany, on June 29-30, 2000, at Congress Center.
The first, second and forth IBS conferences were held in Porthcawl, South Wales, UK in 1996, 1997 and 1999 and the third IBS conference in Jerusalem, Israel. We believe that all of them were extremely successful, and we plan to continue the tradition of exchanging information and ideas pertaining to the treatment of human diseases using living invertebrates such as fly maggots, leeches and bees.
Maggot therapy, the treatment of suppurative skin infections with the larvae of calliphorid flies, was first introduced by William Baer in 1929 and used extensively during the 30's and 40's. The method was abandoned with the commercial introduction of antibiotics. The renewed use of maggot therapy since the mid 80's has spurred a tremendous leap forward. Today, hundreds of medical institutions in USA, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Israel use this method for the treatment of intractable wounds.
Medicinal leeches were used for bloodletting, and have been applied to congested or inflamed parts of the human body for over 2,000 years. Today, leeches are used in plastic surgery, for the treatment of avulsed appendages following successful arterial revascularization where there is limited venous repair. Leeches are also used in the treatment of such disorders as inflammation, peripheral venous and arterial diseases.
Bee venom therapy has been known for more than twelve centuries. Currently, this method is being used extensively in China, Korea, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and the USA. In these countries ten of thousands people suffering from rheumatoid diseases and multiple sclerosis have been treated by this method.
At the Fifth International Conference on Biotherapy the clinical aspects of treatment with these organisms, as well as the scientific basis for their actions will be discussed. The Conference will consist of oral and poster presentations.
We hope that this Conference will give you the opportunity to renew existing links with friends and colleagues around the world, and to create new collaborations and friendships.
Enclosed please find a copy of the first announcement of this Conference. Please share this information with any physician and scientist who might be interested.
Yours Sincerely,
On behalf of the Organizing Committee
Dr. Kosta Y. Mumcuoglu, Israel (Chairman) and
Dr. John Church, UK
