Opportunities for graduate student research:
We have three parasitology projects underway in environmental and ecological
studies in the St. Lawrence River, based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
1. Study of parasites in spottail shiners in relation to municipal
effluents. This study is part of a major research program including
ecotoxicological and chemical investigations looking at environmental
effects of municipal effluents in the St. Lawrence River. The parasitology
study is closely linked to studies of fish immune response and endocrine
modulation, and will expand to include examination of reproductive effects
in fish.
2. Effects of fluctuating water levels on parasite fauna of golden shiners
and yellow perch in the St. Lawrence River. This project is part of a major
multidisciplinary program studying effects of water level fluctuations, and
includes studies on primary production and macrophyte species composition
and abundance, fish spawning, waterfowl, hydrography, erosion, and
socioeconomic consequences.
3. Examination of parasite fauna of leopard frogs exposed to pesticides and
development of a host-parasite laboratory model to examine immune function
in leopard frogs. This project is part of a multidisciplinary externally
funded program looking at physiological, immunological and endocrine effects
of exposure of frogs to pesticides.
Projects are available at the MSc or PhD level. Research will be based at
the St. Lawrence Centre (SLC), a regional laboratory of Environment Canada,
involved in environmental studies on the St. Lawrence River. Students will
be expected to work within multidisciplinary teams at the SLC and local
universities during the course of their research. Academically, students
will be registered in the Biology Department at Concordia University, and
co-supervised by Dr. J.D. McLaughlin of that department. Financial support
for qualified students will be covered through summer employment with
Environment Canada and teaching assistantships in the Biology Department.
