Detection of Balantidium in pigs

Folks,

Could someone help one of my students who would like to check pigs for
the presence of Balantidium in fecal matter? We looked for articles
but the references we found are mostly not in our library. It will
take a while to get these interlibrary loan and meanwhile we would
like to get started on the project. Do we use smears on slide and
check for oocysts and trophozoites or do we need to concentrate the
samples. I think I had a student use a sucrose gradient in the past
to try and detect Cryptosporidium oocytes in the past.

There was one abstract of a Danish investigation that suggested adult
pigs are more apt to have the parasite. I assume pigs with heavy
infestation might have looser stools.

Thanks for any feedback
