2 postgraduate (PhD) studentships are available for 3 years from 1st October 
1995 at the University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Scotland.

1. BBSRC studentship: eligibility- U.K. students with a 1st or upper 2nd 
class hons degree in a Biological subject which includes some courses in 
Plant Sciences. Students will receive a standard research council 
maintenance grant and UK fees.

2. St Andrews University studentship: eligibility- any nationality but 
non-UK nationals will have to pay the difference between UK and overseas 
fees, which will amount to approximately 5,600 pounds sterling per year. 
A maintenenace grant will be provided (approximately 4,900 pounds per 
year). A first or upper 2nd class honours degree (or equivalent) is 
required, as in 1.

Research subjects: 3 broad projects are available:

1. Development and function of plant mitochondria
2. Localisation of nitrogen assimilating enzymes in higher plants
3. Effects of ultraviolet B irradiation on plant development

Techniques: Immunolocalisation (electron microscopy, image analysis), in 
situ hybridisation, enzyme assay, gel electrophoresis and western 
blotting, growth analysis, organelle and protoplast isolation.
