Professor and Head, Department of Horticulture.  Applications are invited from
individuals with outstanding leadership qualities for the position of
Professor and Head, Department of Horticulture.  Qualified candidates for this
12-month position will have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent academic degree in
horticulture, or related plant science discipline, and will have demonstrated
strong administrative and academic leadership skills.  Professional and/or
academic experience in horticulture or plant sciences is expected, as is
in-depth knowledge of university teaching, research, and extension functions. 


The Department Head reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural
Sciences and has responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the growth of
programs in resident education, extension, and research, as well as
administrative responsibility for academic affairs, personnel, finances, and
facilities.  Additional responsibilities include strengthening relationships
with other departments, horticultural industries, government, and other public
and private clientele.  

The department has 300 undergraduates seeking B.S. degrees in horticulture and
landscape contracting, and 47 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs. 
In addition to the graduate program in horticulture, students in the
department pursue degrees in plant physiology, genetics, and ecology under the
guidance of participating faculty.  Research and instructional programs are
conducted by 26 faculty.  University Park and the town of State College are
home to 38,000 students, with another 31,000 distributed among 20 commonwealth
campuses.  Central Pennsylvania hosts many cultural and sporting events, and
offers a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.
