  OFFICE MEMO Postdoc position available Date:11/27/95

A postdoctoral position is available immediately to use molecular genetic
approaches to study the regulation of chloroplast gene expression in the
unicellular eukaryotic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Our groups at Boyce
Thompson (David Stern) and Cornell University (Karen Kindle) are using
chloroplast transformation and a variety of genetic and biochemical strategies
to define chloroplast transcript features and processes that regulate
translation initiation and mRNA stability (see PNAS 90:497; EMBO J. 12:3627;
Plant Cell 7:1295). Nuclear transformation has been used to generate
insertional mutations that show defects in chloroplast gene expression. The
analysis of these mutations and the cloning of the affected genes by a plasmid
rescue approach should give insights into how nuclear-encoded gene products
regulate chloroplast gene expression at the level of transcript stability and
translation.

Interested individuals should send a statement of research interests,
curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of three
references to: Dr. Karen L. Kindle, 151 Biotechnology Building, Cornell
University, Ithaca, NY 14853; phone (607) 254-4851 The Boyce Thompson
Institute and Cornell University are affirmative action and equal opportunity
employers; women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
