Sad News: Elizabeth L. Gross passed away on June 27, 2007

Professor Elizabeth L. Gross, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, The Ohio
State University (OSU) , Columbus, Ohio, passed away on June 27, 2007. She
was a pioneer in the area of Biophysics and Biochemistry of
photosynthesis. In the recent past, she studied the ‘Structure and
Function of Plastocyanin, and Cytochrome f”, especially the interaction
between these proteins and the electron transport process in
photosynthesis, using both experimental and computational approaches.
Elizabeth (friends called her Liz) was born in 1940. She obtained her BA
(Biophysics), in 1961, from the University of California at Los Angeles
(UCLA), and her PhD (Biophysics) from the University of California at
Berkeley, in 1967, under the guidance of Lester Packer. Liz did her
post-doc research with Tony San Pietro, at the Kettering Research Lab,
from 1967-1968. From 1968, Liz has been on the faculty in Biochemistry at
the Ohio State University; she retired in 2006 after ~39 years of service.
She had advised 13 graduate and 6 postdoctoral students. She had also
collaborated with Charlie Arntzen, Dick Dilley and Govindjee. Liz has
published over 65 top research papers mostly in Archives of Biochemistry
and Biophysics , Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, and Biophysical Journal,
but also in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communication,
Biochemistry, Photochemistry and Photobiology, Photosynthesis Research,
Plant Physiology and Nature,

Chronologically, her former PhD students were: Dan D, Davis; Lawrence
Prochaska; Joseph Laszlo; Kent O. Burkry; Rong Long Pan; Douglas G.
Sanderson; George Anderson; Stewart Durell; Steven Molnar; Douglas C.
Pearson, Jr., and Esmail J. Haddadian. Her postdoctoral associates,
again, chronologically were: Masaki Takahashi; Peter Abdella; Ravindra
Bhardwaj; Yiji Fan; Baishnab Tripathy; and James Draheim.

A detailed obituary of Elizabeth L. Gross is currently being prepared by
Richard Sayre, of OSU, in cooperation with the former students of Liz, for
publication in ‘Photosynthesis Research’.

She is survived by her husband Bob and family members.
