As an undergraduate at Michigan I was fortunate to be associated with Ed Voss
while he was (and still is) writing the "Michigan Flora":
Part 1 Gymnosperms and Monocots (1972)
Part 2 Dicots (1st half) (1985)
Part 3 Dicots (2nd half) (expected in 1998 at the current rate)
They contain workable keys, distribution maps, and readable descriptions. For
example in the general description of the Brassicaceae he writes: "...one does
not get a toxic dose of mustard oils from anointing a hamburger, and most
children are in no danger of overeating brussels sprouts or broccoli!
