I would contact the people in the Wisconsin
Fast Plants group at University of Wis, Madison
(fastplants at calshp.cals.wisc.edu). They can
help with some interesting materials to get your
student started. There is also at Madison, the
Crucifer Genetics Cooperative, (crgc at macc.wisc.edu),
which has a wide range of crucifer mutants that the
student might select for the breeding.
Paul Williams in the Plant Pathology department
is the "master-mind" behind both groups, as far as
I can tell.
