Obtaining cells from plant tissues

I am looking for a method to isolate cells from maize roots. I vaguely
remember  a paper from "Plant Physiology" (forgot the year of publication)
describing a method that involves gentle grinding in EDTA solutions. Will
pectinase incubation release cells?

Any suggestions, ideas or literature references are most welcome.
