Is CAM an answer to photorespiration?

Hi, I have a question concerning plant phisiology, are CAM plants primarily
an answer to photorespiration, like C4 plants, or are they basically an
adaption to arid ambients, reduction of photorespiration being a welcome
biproduct? A related question would be if it is consequently fine studying
them in a Plant Phisiology course along with C4 plants as a way of
increasing CO2 concentration near Rubisco and reducing
photorespiration. Opinions will be very welcome.
