Was the experiment done both ways, i.e. with either red or blue dye on the
cut side and the opposite color on the uncut side? Otherwise, you could not
tell if the red dye was translocated effectively. Acidic dyes translocate
well but basic dyes do not.
Esau's Anatomy of Seed Plants notes that the short internodes in flowers
cause the vascular bundles to branch and combine more irregularly than in a
vegetative shoot.
