HI folks,
we're discussing the recent Nature paper in my plant phys course where
Greenbaum et al. isolated a Chlamy mutant with only PSII that actually
functions well in an anaerobic environment. When oxygen is present, these
cells stop Pn and eventually bleach. The authors suggest that the aqcuisition
of PSI may have been an adaptation to allow survival in high oxygen
atmospheres, and note that PSII can release superoxide radicals. Question (
maybe i'm missing somethin obvious here, oh well): just how would PSI
accomplish this? What would a detoxifying role of PSI be?
