Are plant diversity courses still needed for undergrads?

Should we teach taxonomy and life cycles? If we don't, in a few decades
no one will know how to name the organism they are theorizing about. Yes,
students need to learn to think, investigate, and solve problems, but to
do that efficiently, and not re-invent the wheel, they need to be able to
use the tools that already exist. At the same time, for the tools to be
effective, we need to give students experience in using them to solve
these problems by letting them explore, with our guidance. We need to
teach both.
