According to Simpson and Ogorzaly. 1995. Economic Botany: Plants in Our
World. 2nd Ed. NY: McGraw Hill, p 348:
"Early settlers in the northeast collected the fruits of the bayberry,
Myrica pensylvanica (Myrticaceae), and boiled the berries to melt off the
wax. The wax, scooped from the surfaces of the boiling cauldrons, cooled
and was laer remelted for use in candles."
