HELP PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HELP THEMSELVES: WELFARE CAN
HELP.

This is the story of a lady named K.

K is 32 and has a 13 and a 9 year old daughter. The father left many years
ago and K was left alone to raise her two offspring. With no education and
no valuable skills, she soon joined the miserable ranks of poverty.
Working two and sometime three jobs to try to feed her children and
herself, renting low income housing from slum lords, and driving cars not
fit to be on the road, she soon found out that to waitress for $ 2.00 an
hour was going to keep her in poverty forever.
K, swallowing her pride, applied and obtained federal aid. She also begged
state
agencies to try to get the $30,000.00 due to her for child support. 2-1/2
years later, she
still has not heard a word from anyone...

K is a smart person; she knew that she could not depend on welfare
forever, but she
saw an opportunity. Welfare was helping her make ends meet but that was
about
the extent of it. Immediately she applied with Project Chance... 2 years
after
applying she finally received a response; but she did not need their help
anymore, and
this is why:
K realized that she had to take matters into her on hands. She knew that
to succeed, to
be able to raise her children and to come off welfare, she was going to
need an
education. K was now on a mission.....
2 years ago, K did not even have an high school diploma. She took her
G.E.D and
passed with high honors which put her in the top 8% of the states high
school
graduates. She was the G.E.D opening ceremony's speaker, and she was
featured
in the front page of the newspaper in that 100,000 + city. I could see the
pride, the happiness and the hope in her and her children's eyes. For
graduating with high honors, K earned a grant that would enable her to
attend junior college for one semester; so of course, she enrolled full
time. Even though she was working two full time jobs, one in her field of
studies which paid about $150.00 a month and a $2.00 an hour waitress job,
she still managed to support her girls and graduate Phi Theta Kappa from
junior college with an associates' degree, a 3.89 G.P.A., and the utmost
respect from her professors and advisor.

THE WELFARE SHE IS RECEIVING HELP MAKE ALL THIS POSSIBLE

K is now a junior working on 2 majors at a university in Illinois. With a
4.00 G.P.A.,
she is determined to finish her education and to make her dream to be a
reporter/writer
come true. K is full of talents, and is well recognized for her writing
abilities. She was promised a job with a local newspaper and her employers
and professors call her a
diamond in the rough. When she graduates from the university, K will have
4 to 5 years
experience in her field of study, a masters in Journalism and a master in
sociology.

Things have changed lately and our government plans to cut welfare, and
education
grants are next. K is scared that she wont be able to finish school when
her welfare
benefits are cut. Now 2 years from realizing her goals, it is about to be
taken away from her.

PLEASE MR. PRESIDENT, HELP THE ONES WHO HELP THEMSELVES REWARD THE ONES
WHO HAVE TRIED SO HARD TO GET OFF WELFARE; REWARD THEIR HARD WORK AND
DETERMINATION. THE WELFARE PAID TO THOSE PEOPLE WAS
NOT A WASTE OF GOVERNMENT FUNDS. THOSE PEOPLE WERE NOT BORN TO RICH
FAMILIES AND YOU ARE THE ONLY HOPE THEY HAVE IN REALIZING THE AMERICAN
DREAM AND TO BECOMING USEFUL EDUCATED TAX PAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS. PLEASE
MR. PRESIDENT, DON'T THROW THEM BACK INTO
POVERTY AND RUIN THEIR LIVES. FOR SOME OF THEM, IT IS THEIR LAST CHANCE.
AND I'M SURE THAT THE COST OF ONE SCUD MISSILE WOULD MORE THAN PROVIDE FOR
MANY INDIVIDUALS LIKE THE YOUNG LADY NAMED K WHOM I JUST TOLD YOU ABOUT.

I'm just a friend who is at lost about what to do to help K, and this is
my way of
helping.

To anyone who cares to encourage, help or just wants more info about K,
her address
is: P.O. Box 82, Murphysboro, IL 62966. I'm sure she will respond to all
who care to
talk.

Sincerely....

Just a caring soul..

Onward thru the fog...
