How do seed cells know the difference between top and bottom?

Supposedly, the statolith theory has been tested in space. The
statoliths remained toward the center of the cell, and the plant
did not "know" which way is up. However, the lack of gravity
may also have affected the proteins/protoplast spoken of in
the previous post, so who knows?  There were some articles 
written concerning those experiments in space (though I have
never read them), perhaps if you can find those, they will
provide some clues...................
