What Causes Birdseye Grain Distortions???

Greetings - I was recently contacted by a former student about the
phenomenon of Birdseye grain distortions in sugar maple growth rings. It
seems the distortions produce a series of indentations in the wood which
make the trees very desirable to tree harvesters (the veneer from such
trees can fetch many $$"s). Question is this - anyone know of any
physiological explanation that can account for the birdseye in maples?
Thanks in advance for any ideas or reasons!
