Color changes in Boletus

Dear colleagues,

Recently I received an interesting question from a colleague in the
chemistry department:

As most of us know several fungi show color changes when they are wounded.
Actually this is often used as a criterium in the species determination.
However, I could not answer the question on the chemistry of this response.
To my guess the color change is probably related to the oxidation of some
compounds. The question is of course which compounds ? More particularly,
what are the compounds responsible for this reaction in the species
Boletus badius.

I would appreciate any ideas on this or anyone forwarding this message to
a more appropriate newsgroup.

Thanks
Han Asard
