Dave,
I like your idea of exchanging comments and reading them. One thing I
found to be critical was to engage the class in discussion the first day.
That way students can see how you and their peers respond to "wrong"
answers while they are still safe from having been taught anything or
required to read anything in the course. When I have not done this the
first day, it has been much harder to get discussion going.
