I just looked this up and it appears that Polygonum hydropiperoides is a
member of the very large Buckwheat (Polygonaceae) family. Its common
name is listed as Mild Water-pepper in Herbaceous Plants of Maryland,
1984, Brown and Brown, Port City Press, Baltimore, MD p. 410. Hope that
this adds to the discussion.
