The rapid response you might seek is accomplished
in the bowl of water. I did try planting some of
mine...but my conditions and soil mix were apparently
not too close to right. Alternatively the plants
may have been dead.
The hydration and color change is mostly a physical
response, and is not necessarily indicative of a
living plant. I got my Selaginella lepidophylla
from Carolina Biological and their instructions were
quite good and admitted that only a few of their
plants are actually "viable."
