I'm on a roll...
I teach my Plant Diversity course this way. The class meets in a lab room,
and I introduce the topic under discussion, maybe do some diagrams on the
board, overheads, etc. to set the stage. We then look at pictures of the
organisms via color slides with a projector, then students go right to
looking at fresh or preserved specimens, microscope slides, and so on.
There is no time lag between hearing about something new (and perhaps
abstract) and seeing the real thing. I'm excited that others are also
using this approach!
