Hoyer's solution for chromosome stain

Greetings
I have heard that a simple means to stain
chromosomes in cells to display mitosis is by using
fern gametophytes since they have a flat single
celled sheet-like morphology, so the squashing that is
needed in onion root tips is not needed.

I have further heard that to stain the
chromosomes in these cells one uses a drop of
aceto-carmine and a drop of Hoyer's solution.

However I have not been able to find this
procedure listed anywhere. Does anyone know if this
procedure works? And if so could they share the
procedures for making up these two stains? Growing
the fern gametophytes is easy, I just do not know
how to make up these stains.

	Thanks

Scott
