I would add that, while I have used that formulation,
I prefer to use a 2-part stain. The phloroglucinol
is dissolved in alcohol (Part A) and the 20% HCl
is Part B. Note: Concentrated HCl is about 38% so
this is really about a 1:1 dilution of concentrate.
It is also important to note that most failures with
phloroglucinol can be traced to loss of HCl from the
combination stain or from Part B. HCl is a gas and
does leak out of most droppers, etc. I replace part
B every semester...no such change for Part A.
