Perhaps not a textbook, but good for supplemental readings and mind-expanding
concepts is Stephen Jay Gould's _Wonderful Life_. Even if you don't
agree with his contingency theories, it is a fascinating read, and all
the "hard" concepts are thoroughly explained. What he says about animals
could certainly be translated to plants.
