I use the concept of 'functional plants' when beginning this topic in
biology and other plant courses. This allows me to present plants in
an ecological perspective. That can be followed up at a later
date with an introduction to formal classification and many
evolutionary concepts afforded by eukaryotic algal groups &
cyanobacteria.
