I too have found modern nail varnish less satisfactory than in
yesteryear. It seems more rubbery and therefore does not like being
peeled off with forceps.
The trick I use with young students is to apply "sellotape" ("scotch
tape" over the pond?) to the dried nail varnish and pull the varnish off
with the tape. The tape and impression can then be stuck to a micrsocope
slide.
