acid washed sand

I'm doing some work on plant culture in perlite/sand, and various
procedures call for "acid washed sand". I have some really simple
questions--

Are there special sorts of sand one should use, or will "play sand"
from a hardware store be OK? I've usually just rinsed it several
times in distilled water.
Should the sand be autoclaved?
What does "acid washing" mean - what acid, what concentration, how long, etc.?
I'm not thrilled by the idea of sloshing around sand in buckets of acid.
Is there a commercial source of appropriate sand for plant nutrient studies?
